Julian Meagher

Julian Meagher (b. 1978) is an Australian artist based in Sydney whose luminous paintings explore portraiture, landscape, memory, and the mysteries of the natural world. Working primarily with thin, translucent layers of oil paint on linen, he creates ethereal surfaces that are often mistaken for watercolor. His atmospheric compositions draw inspiration from ocean horizons, shifting skies, moonlight, tidal forces, dreams, and the emotional connections between people and place. Before pursuing painting full-time, Meagher completed a medical degree and studied classical portraiture at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence. His work balances technical precision with a poetic sensitivity to light, color, spirituality, and contemporary Australian identity. A four-time Archibald Prize finalist, Meagher has exhibited extensively throughout Australia, Asia, and the United States, with works held in numerous public collections.
